In 1996 sunderland took on Kevin Keegan's Newcastle United at Roker Park. Sunderland took the lead first however newcastle won 2-1 thanks to goals through Peter Beardsley and Les Ferdinand. Away fans were banned from the ground.
In 1997 sunderland took on Newcastle United at St James' Park, and newcastle childishly had banned sunderland away fans for no reason because of the first game at roker park. Sunderland stunned the place by taking the lead first. Newcastle were saved from embarrassment through Alan Shearer's equaliser. Sunderland also played Middlesbrough drawing 2-2 at Roker Park, and winning 1-0 at the new riverside stadium.
