The 1999/2000 season was sunderland's second season in the premier league and the most successful season the club has had in 50 years and possibly the most memorable in the eyes of most Sunderland fans.
Spurred on by Peter Reid, after gaining a then record of 105 points in the first division. Sunderland firstly looked to be the whipping boys of the premiership as they were beaten 4-0 at Stamford bridge by Chelsea (later revenged with a 4-1 hammering at the Stadium of Light) and tipped by many to struggle in the premiership due to Reid's lack of ambition transferwise. However the club and its players soon proved everyone wrong as their form boomed after the defeat and Kevin Phillips hit the mark of top scorer in the premiership, scoring 30 goals and becoming the first and so far only english player to win the european golden boot.
Sunderland were hovering in the champions league spots by christmas but a lack of consistency saw them finish 7th. Reguardless of that it still is their highest ever finish in the premiership.
