In the 2009/2010 season Sunderland will be competing in the Premier League for a 9th season, and a 3rd season in succession since their promotion in 2007. under manager Steve Bruce, the team will be looking to push on from the 16th place they obtained last time and aim to go through a season avoiding any relegation threat. There will be no derby games for sunderland this year, following the relegations of both of their northeast rival clubs.
