Anthony Stokes (born July 25, 1988 in Dublin) is an Irish footballer, who currently plays for Hibernian as a Striker/Winger. He featured for Sunderland A.F.C. from 2007 to 2009, where despite getting off to a good start he had a relatively poor spell.

[edit] Playing career

Stokes started his footballing career at Arsenal and made his only appearance in the League Cup against Sunderland.

Stokes underwent a trial at Sunderland, but Niall Quinn decieded against it as a result of a large squad depth and lack of reserve team. Following this he signed for Falkirk on loan till the end of the season, he scored 3 hat-tricks in his time at Falkirk including back to back ones against Dundee and Dunfermline, making 16 appearances and scoring 14 goals in total.

Stokes signed for Sunderland following interest from Celtic and Charlton, for a fee of £2,000,000, later revealing that it was Roy Keane that drew him there.

On his debut he assisted David Connolly against Ipswich, he scored his first goal for Sunderland against Plymouth with a 20 yard strike. He scored his first premier league goal against Derby County as a last minute winner to take Sunderland out of the relagation area.

After this Stokes failed to score or even make an impact again for Sunderland, despite some good pre-season form at the beginning of the 2008/2009 season. He found himself degraded from number 9 to number 44, featuring only once in the league for that whole season and falling out of favour. He was sent for loan spells at crystal palace and sheffield united, but failed to seriously impress at both clubs.

At the beginning of the 2009/2010 season Stokes joined Hibernian on an undisclosed fee, likely never to see premier league football again as he wasted away his SAFC opportuntiy on the drink, and generally not caring.
