Ben Alnwick born (January 1, 1987 in Prudhoe) is an English football goalkeeper who currently plays for Tottenham Hotspur, he featured for Sunderland from 2004 to 2007. Alnwick has also had loan spells at Luton town, Leicester City and Carlisle United.
[edit] Sunderland Career
Alnwick was a promosing product of Sunderland's youth academy and made his first team breakthrough in the end of the 2004/2005 Season where he replaced the injured Thomas Myhre for the last three games, impressing especially against Leicester City[2] and West Ham United; his form helping Sunderland to seal promotion and the championship title in both of those games.
The following 2005/2006 season was a well documented disaster for Sunderland from all perspectives, Alnwick only featured for a few games but made an impression at a 3-2 defeat to Tottenham by saving a penalty from Robbie Keane[3]. Though for most of the season he was Kelvin Davis, Sunderland's number one keeper at the time.
After the 15 point season in 2006/2007, Kelvin Davis was sold to Southampton and Ben Alnwick was made the number one keeper at the club. He made several appearances at the beginning of this season but had minimal impact and after Roy Keane arrived at the club; Alnwick found himself dropped in favour of the more experienced goalkeeper Darren Ward. But what was the last nail in the coffin for Ben Alnwick's sunderland career was a sexual scandal with a teenage girl and the other Sunderland players Liam Lawrence, Martin Woods and Chris Brown, which was filmed and made public[4]. Causing Roy Keane, in an act of discipline and to remove any bad publicity the club had recieved; to sell off the players in which Alnwick was sold to Tottenham Hotspur in exchange for Marton Fulop and £500,000[5]. There he has found himself in a pecking order below several quality keepers, and hence rarely featured for them.
