Reyna signed from rangers in the 2001/2002 season by Peter Reid which was attempt to get sunderland into the UEFA Champions league, even though the season turned out to be a disaster when the club was nearlly relegated at the end. Claudio Reyna's time at sunderland was largely disrupted by injury. However when he was fit he was mostly a success in midfield due to his pace. At the end of the 2002/2003 season sunderland were relegated on 19 points, Claudio Reyna left for Manchester City.
