Daniel John "Danny" Higginbotham (born 29 December 1978 in Manchester, England) is an English footballer who currently plays as a defender for Sunderland. Higginbotham started his footballing career at Manchester United.

Starting his career at Machester United, he also spent time at their feeder club Royal Antwerp, while at Antwerp he was banned from football for a year after allegedly attacking a referee, with the sentence being reduced to 4 months following trial.

He signed for Derby County but after they were relagated he moved to Southampton on loan till the end of the 2002/2003 season, and made the deal permanent the following season for £1,500,000. He was in the same side that reached the FA Cup final after an amazing run but was an unused substitute.

Higginbotham signed for Stoke City on the 3rd August, 2006 for £225,000, playing numerous games at left back, and was later awarded the club captaincy.

Sunderland signed Higginbotham for £2,500,000 on a four year deal, he scored his first goal against rivals Newcastle on the 10th November, 2007 in the 1–1 draw scoring a header.
