Mackem is a term that refers to the dialect and people of the Wearside area, or more specifically Sunderland, a city in North East England. Alternative spellings include "Makem", "Maccam", and "Mak'em". The exact origin of the term is unknown, although it is sometimes thought to be related to the prestigious ship building docks in sunderland, because of the phrase mak-em and tak-em.
