Marcus Stewart (born William Marcus Paul Tubbs on 7 November 1972 in Bristol) is a former Sunderland striker. In the 1999/2000 season Ipswich Town won The Play-Offs in Division 1 (now known as The Championship), with Marcus Stewart contributing many goals. In the 2000/2001 season Ipswich amazingly finished 5th and qualified for The Uefa Cup, with Marcus Stewart scoring 21 goals in all competitions. He scored 19 in the FA Premier League, and was the league's second highest scorer and the league's highest English scorer, with many fans, neutrals and pundits calling for him to be included in the England squad. The 2001/2002 season was the complete opposite, with Ipswich suffering from second-season syndrome, and they were relegated. Marcus Stewart and Marcus Bent were Ipswich's joint top scorers, with 10 each. Sunderland had finished 17th in the 2001/2002 season, after finishing 7th in the 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 seasons, so they were looking to finish much higher in the league in the 2002/2003 season. In The Summer Transfer Window 2002 then-manager Peter Reid sold many players he thought were under-performing and bought several players for fees and wages the club could not afford, including Marcus Stewart. The 2002/2003 season was an even bigger disaster for Sunderland. They finished bottom of the league with a record low 19 points. There was a blight of injuries, the 'under-performing' players who had been sold were sorely missed and the new players did not live up to expectations, including Marcus Stewart. He played 9 full games and came on a substitute 10 times in the league scoring only once. He played twice in The FA Cup, scoring once, and played 3 times in The League Cup scoring 4 times. Because of the masses spent on wages and fees, and the terrible lack of success, the club was now in over £40 million of debt, so to try and relieve some of the debt many players were sold for fractions of their estimated prices. Marcus Stewart remained at the club. The 2003/2004 season was better for Sunderland. They finished third in Division 1 (now known as The Championship), but were beaten in the Semi-Final of The Play-Offs by Crystal Palace, who eventually won promotion. They also reached The FA Cup Semi-Final but were beaten by fellow Division 1 side Millwall, who were eventually beaten in the final by Manchester United. Marcus Stewart formed a successful strike partnership with Kevin Kyle in the 2003/2004 season, and they were the first choice strikers all season. Marcus Stewart was the number 10 and Kevin Kyle was the number 9, the classic numbering for a strike partnership in a 4-4-2 formation, which is what Sunderland used all season. Marcus Stewart played 28 times in the league, and came on as a substitute 12 times, scoring 14 goals. He played in both Play-Off Semi-Finals, scoring in both of them. He played in 3 FA Cup games and came on as a substitute in the other 2, but didn't score in any of them. He played in both League Cup games, but didn't score in either of them. In total he played 35 games and came on as a substitute 14 times and scored 16 goals. The 2004/2005 season was even more successful for Sunderland, as they won The Championship and were promoted. Kevin Kyle was severely injured for most of the season, and Stephen Elliott, who had been bought in The Summer Transfer Window 2004, was played up front with Marcus Stewart instead. They also formed a prolific strike partnership. Marcus Stewart played 40 times in the league and came on as a substitute 3 times, scoring 16 goals. He played twice in The FA Cup, scoring once. He played in one League Cup game, and didn't score. In total he played in 43 games and came on as a substitute 3 times, and scored 17 goals. After helping Sunderland win promotion to The Premier League, Marcus Stewart humbly announced he was too old and therefore not good enough to play at a Premier League standard, and asked to be transferred to a lower league team. Mick McCarthy respectfully accepted his decision. In The Summer Transfer Window 2005 he transferred to the team he had supported as a boy, Bristol City.
