Michael Bridges born (5 August 1978 in North Shields) is a former sunderland center foward, who was a product of the Sunderland youth system. Playing for the club from 1995 to 1999. He currently holds the sunderland record for the highest fee received by the club, in which he was bought from sunderland for £5 million. He also had a spell at the club in the 2004/2005 season.

[edit] Sunderland History

Michael Bridges had been at the club since 1995, however it was in the 1996/1997 season when his talent began to shine for Sunderland, as he scored three goals, even though the club was relegated at the end of the season. Many had labelled Bridges the "new Alan Shearer" while he was a Sunderland player. He stayed at Sunderland until the end of the record breaking 1998/1999 season, where Leeds United bought him for £5 million, the highest fee received by Sunderland.

[edit] Second Spell at the club

After Bridges had a successful spell at leeds United his career fell into ruins and he never became the "new Alan Shearer" England expected due to his career being plagued by injuries and a lack of confidence. In the 2004/2005 season Bridges was loaned to Sunderland from Bolton wanderers as his spell with the Lanchasire club was a disaster. He played 11 goals on loan scoring only twice. He was then snapped up by Sunderland for £150,000 but left for Bristol City at the end of the season.
