Mick McCarthy

From Sunderland A.F.C. Wiki

Mick McCarthy

Mick McCarthy was sunderland's manager from 2003-2006. McCarthy was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, but his father was Irish so he represented his country as a footballer and a manager. He was known for falling out with Roy Keane during the 2002 world cup Saipan Incident.

[edit] Sunderland history

McCarthy arrived at sunderland in 2003 to attempt to save the club from relegation to the Coca Cola Championship, he replaced a very unsuccessful Howard Wilkinson. Unfortunately he was unable to save the club and they were relegated. The next season McCarthy had to rebuild the club squad himself from cheap players from lower leagues to the massive debt the club was suffering because of previous unaffective signings by Peter Reid. MCcarthy's side surprisingly got to the fa cup semi final that season and 3rd in the league, only to loose in the playoff's to crystal palace. The next season the team finished champions, MCcarthy winning his only honor with the club, however it was not his fault but Bob Murray's greediness which would provide the horror to come the following season...

In the 2005/2006 season Bob Muarry only gave Mick MCcarthy £5 million to spend, which meant he could only pay for cheap unproven players, the result: a complete disaster, and he found himself sacked in 2006. His replacement was the caretaker manager Kevin Ball.

He moved on to become the next manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, and found himself up against sunderland with ironically his former player Roy Keane as the sunderland manager, Keanes side drew 1-1 away and beat them 2-1 at the Stadium of Light.
