Peter Reid born (20 June 1956) was Sunderland's manager from 1995-2002.[1] Reid was known at Sunderland for perhaps his bright and unique tactics, for becoming the first Sunderland manager in a number of years to win back to back games at St. James Park, and also saving sunderland from relegation to the dreaded league one, which would have changed the clubs history forever.

[edit] Sunderland history

Peter Reid became the sunderland manager in March 1995 replacing Mick Buxton,[2] at the time Sunderland were at Roker Park and were fighting for survival in the football league division one, he had seven games to keep the team alive and he did it. The next season he got sunderland unexpectedly promoted into the premier league for the first time in the clubs history for the 1996/1997 season.

The most notable player bought in this season was the future owner Niall Quinn for just over 1 million. The season resulted on sunderland being relegated on 40 points, the club then moved onto its new venue the Stadium of Light for the 1997/1998 season in which he made several purchases including Lee Clark and Kevin Phillips. Peter Reid quickly made aims to return to the premiership and sunderland finished third, only to be stopped by a dramatic play-off final against Charlton athletic. In the 1998/1999 season improvements were made and Peter Reid took sunderland to the first division champions once again, breaking what was then a record 105 points (Broke by reading in 2006).

Peter Reid made sure the next two seasons 1999/2000, 2000/2001 sunderland finished 7th, just missing out on a place in Europe each time and beating Newcastle United F.C. 2-1 at St james' park twice. Afterwards things began to go wrong and sunderland finished just above relegation with a record low of premier division goals. Peter Reid and the club panicked and he spent over 40 million on poor players, things did not improve and Peter Reid was sacked in 2002 and replaced with Howard Wilkinson, the club was relegated not long after.

[edit] After sunderland

After sunderland Peter reid became the manager of Leeds United in 2003 which had been hit with heavy debt, it was not long before the club parted company with him. He later joined coventry and a notable event was when his side beat sunderland in the championship. Again he did not last long before the club parted with him. Since then he has moved on to manage Thailand.

In December 2008 he was linked with the vacant managers post at sunderland following Roy Keane's depature, but denied any interest in the job.

[edit] Trivia

The sunderland fans made a song about Peter Reid called Cheer up Peter Reid which was written in the tune of Daydream believer with the words altered, it managed to hit the UK Top 50.
