- Tom Huddlestone- Tottenham Hotspur- Status: Unproven press rumor
- Peter Lovenkrands- Free agent- Status: Player declared interest in joining, no club offer was confirmed
- Sebastian Bassong- Newcastle- Status: Unproven press rumor, player went on to sign for Tottenham
- Darren Bent- Tottenham Hotspur- Status: There was going press speculation for several months, but at the end of July Sunderland's interest was confirmed as Bent was pulled off a flight to China. However dicussions to agree a fee were infact long due to spurs demands, and despite the saga starting on July 28th, Bent did not sign until August 5th.

- Lee Cattermole- Wigan- Status: Ongoing press speculation for several months, Wigan rejected an intial bid and the club staff insisted he wasn't for sale. However on August 12th, more speculation continued and his signing was announced unexpectedly by the club.

- Tuncay Sali- Middlesbrough- Status: Unproven press rumor
- Jermaine Pennant- Free agent- Status: Unproven press rumor
- Paul Scharner- Wigan- Status: Unproven press rumor, player then reacted by publicly shunning the club
- Stephen Hunt- Reading- Status: Unproven press rumor, player went onto sign for Hull City
- Sol Campbell- Portsmouth- Status: Unproven press rumor, player went onto sign for Notts county
- Steven Davies- Rangers- Status: Unproven press rumor, Rangers said they would reject any enquiries
- Richard Dunne- Manchester City- Status: Unproven press rumor, Niall Quinn then publicly declared an interest in the player
- Kevin Doyle- Reading- Status: Unproven press rumor, player went on to sign for Wolverhampton
- Paulo Da Silva- Deportivo Toluca- Status: After the Mexican media speculated he would be joining Sunderland, Da Silva signed on July 13th with the club beating off interest from Tottenham.
- Peter Crouch- Portsmouth- Status: After months of speculation, it was confirmed on July 15th that he was in talks with Sunderland. However things dragged on for over a week as Crouch appeared to be holding out for another club and Sunderland officially pulled out of the deal on July 21st and on July 28th he signed for Tottenham.
- Fraizer Campbell- Manchester United- After nearly two months of speculation, Campell signed for Sunderland on July 11th beating off competition from Hull.
- Lorik Cana- Olympic Marseille - Press speculation for a couple of days and the player then signed for Sunderland on July 25th
- Mohammed Abdellaoue- Vålerenga- Status: Unproven press rumor, though the club refused to comment on interest from Sunderland
- John Mensah- Intial press speculation that he was signing carried on for weeks, and this was later confirmed by the manager. After a delay in getting a work permit, Mensah finally signed
- Michael Turner- Press speculation linking him with Sunderland quickly materialized into a full time move, Turner signing for an undisclosed fee on August 31
